We visited The Coastguard on a Saturday afternoon and it was very busy. The restaurant area inside is quite small, and was fully reserved so we sat outside. Luckily the weather held out!
We still received table service, we didn't have to order at the bar. The service was ok, but not exactly memorable.
I had pan fried chicken and smoked bacon served on a tomato and feta salad with Dijon dressing (I also ordered a side of chips). The meal looked really nice, though I think it would have looked a little better without the bulky chunks of tomato at the side.
Unfortunately, the main feature of the dish really let it down. The chicken was overcooked and very dry, even becoming a struggle to cut and eat. Besides that the flavours were good, I enjoyed the tomato and feta salad, but it could have used a little more of the Dijon dressing. The crispy bacon bits added a nice texture and flavour.
The chips were good, but to be honest I doubt I'd be able to tell the difference between them and the ones served at Wetherspoons. Though as I was absolutely stuffed at the end of the meal, I think I might have ordered them in an eyes-bigger-than-my-belly moment!
We decided against desserts as the waitress didn't come back to offer them, and just bought some homemade cake at the bar to take away.
The Coastguard is in a nice location, eating outside on a good day with views of the cliffs and sea is lovely. I won't completely write this one off just yet, but next time I'll try their fish or a burger.
