This pub is not too hard to find when you're looking for it, but you're unlikely to just happen across it due to its location. It is well worth seeking out though.
We received a friendly welcome, and were seated close to the bar and the fireplace. The pub has a really cosy, friendly feel, and there appeared to be several locals there at the same time as us.
I ordered the pork belly, which came with creamy mash, greens, a black pudding ball and sweet cooked apples. We were warned that it would take about 25 minutes for the pork, so we ordered some bread and home-churned butter for the meantime. It was delicious, the butter was creamy and the bread was soft, possibly home-made too.
The pork belly was probably the best I've ever had. The meat was tender and soft, the crackling had a snap to it but didn't break the teeth. The black pudding was not as strong or overpowering as it can sometimes be, and the cooked apples complimented the pork perfectly. Every part of the dish was delicious.
After the success of the main, we had to order dessert. I chose a chocolate terrine with salted caramel and honeycomb ice cream. It was a soft sponge with layers of chocolate, all soft and indulgent. The ice cream was fantastic, filled with light honeycomb pieces.
Overall, service was efficient and friendly, and the food fantastic. I would definitely recommend this pub, and will be returning to try the braised ox cheek and the lemon and raspberry mille feuille!
